What is Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)?

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full-contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques to be used in competition, both traditional and non-traditional. The rules allow the use of striking and grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground. Such competitions allow martial artists of all different backgrounds to compete, although three styles have come to prominance: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai and Wrestling.

Though once seen as a "free-for-all" type sport, MMA has now been reinvented and sanctioned by the government to ensure safety and protection of both participants through a series of strict rules and regulations. Participant safety is at the forefront of the new face of MMA.

Our style of MMA:

In MMA, as in a street fight, there are many variables - in fact, there are so many striking and grappling concepts at play at any moment that it can be overwhelming. At Neutral Ground, we know that it’s a lot harder in actual practice than seen on TV. We're always considering the science and the stats, trying to reduce the randomness of the game. Most fights in the street and in the cage end up in the ground, even if neither fighter has any grappling ability. Gravity is constantly pulling both fighters to the ground - any misstep or loss of balance, nature has its way and suddenly, you're ground fighting.

At Neutral Ground, we work both with gravity and people's natural tendency to close the distance and bring the fight to the ground. We begin our MMA training with intensive groundwork that ensures our safety during the inevitable grappling. Once a solid ground game is established, our training focuses additionally on guaranteeing the fight goes to the ground in our favor by using wrestling and judo techniques. And, although fights go to the ground 95% of the time, they start on the feet 100% of the time. With this reality, we cross-train in MMA-focused striking to help us hold our own until we close the distance with our opponent and bring the fight down into our comfort zone.
